The lungs of patients with coronavirus can recover for a very long time, said professor of the Pirogov Russian National Research Medical University, pulmonologist Alexander Karabinenko in an interview with Radio Sputnik.
The specialist noted that due to infection, the respiratory system of a person is impeded and his lungs are affected. After a disease in the lungs, fibrotic changes form. “People are undergoing structural changes that require a long recovery,” the doctor said.
According to Karabinenko, lung tissue will be able to recover over time, however, the timing will depend on the individual characteristics of the body of each person.
Earlier, Swedish doctors proposed treating lung tissue damage with stem cells, which is the main complication of coronavirus infection. It was noted that stem cells are able to prevent an acute reaction of the immune system, which leads to acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) – a condition where the lungs lose their ability to saturate the blood with oxygen.
